Here at MidWest Digital Designs, we focus on what is most important for SEO. With SEO there are so many things that need to be done, so it can be very overwhelming!  By doing the most important things first you will get the quick wins!  Below I will go over what is the most important things you will need to do to have the most improvements on your SEO to rank yourself above your computation in Local SEO!

But before we get into what is most important, there are some things you need to know.  It is very easy to rank terms like “the best plumber in whatever city, whatever state, whatever country”, because nobody is using those search queries.  You need to know your keywords that people are using to bring traffic to your website.  I like to use the FREE Chrome extension Keyword Surfer. Using this tool will tell you the search volume for the keywords you need.

First you need to know what a keyword is.  A keyword is the query people are typing into google.  So if someone was looking for a plumber in New York, they would be searching for “Plumber NYC”, or “Plumber Near Me”.

What is first in SEO?

Below we will go over the most important things that need to be done for SEO.  The items will include URL, Keyword Optimization, Title Tags, Meta Description, High-Quality Content, and an SEO audit. By taking care of all of these items your ranking will skyrocket!

Title Tags should be done sooner rather than later

The title tags are an important ranking factor when it comes to SEO.  Your title tag should be close to 60 characters.  When you search for something you will see something like this:

title tags for SEO

My title tag is “Web Design in Michigan | Helping businesses in a big way”.  The keyword I am ranking for is “Web Design in Michigan”, which is why it is to the right. Then I have a separator, which is “|”, then I have “Helping businesses in a big way”, which is my brand moto.  You can use anything that will sound appealing to your customers.

The URL for SEO

The URL is an important ranking factor.  If your keywords are “Plumber NYC”, then your service page should be www.yourdomain.com/plumber-NYC. Google takes the URL strongly into consideration when it comes to ranking and having the relevance to rank higher.

Your Meta Descriptions matter!

There has been a lot of information about SEO and Meta descriptions because it is not a ranking factor.  While it doesn’t help your SEO, it will help your CTR (Click through Rate), which is a ranking factor.  My Meta description on my homepage is:

“The Highest Rated Website Design in Michigan. Our professional website designs convert your consumers into customers! Located in Sterling Heights, Michigan.”

While I am still targeting my keywords and geolocation, it is written for an audience.  You need to make sure that your Meta description is written to entice someone to click your website over your competitors.

Infamous SEO audit

I personally like to use screaming frog.  I do have a paid version of it, but for a basic SEO audit, the free version of Screaming Frog will work great.  Screaming frog does have a slight learning curve, but it is very easy to use after you use it a few times.  This tool will crawl through your website and tell you all of the important information you need to fix your SEO.  It will tell you every page on your website, the H1 tags, H2 tags, title, meta description, 404 errors (404 error is a page that cannot be found, which hurts your ranking), broken links, and so much more.

I know that sounds intimidating, but after you see the report it isn’t that bad.  Fixing the basic issues of missing H1 tags, missing meta descriptions, and 404 issues will help boost the health of your website and increase the ranking!

The conclusion

When you fix the items above your ranking will increase.  These are some of the most important factors when it comes to SEO.  I will personally guarantee when you fix those issues your ranking will increase on Google.  Make sure you check your Google Search Console to see the improvements!
